SPEECH & LANGUAGE

At Kingsdown School we want to offer support in a variety of ways to our pupils while they are accessing home learning. We have enrolled in an online resource for parents/carers to access from home. Speechlink Parent Portal will give detailed information and activities to guide parent/carers to support the development of their child’s speech and language.

The online resource is user friendly and offers information in a variety of ways, such as videos and blogs, to ensure that parents/carers feel confident in each activity and how this can support speech and language development.

How to access Speechlink Parent Portal   –  To access the online resource follow this link:  https://speechandlanguage.info/parents

This link will take you directly to the parent portal homepage (see image below). There is no need to enter a username or password for this.

From the homepage you will be able to access all the information using the top menu.

· Top tips videos – These are videos put together by speech and language therapists of simple strategies you can use at home. They don’t need any special equipment or specialist skills. Sometimes it is the small changes that make the biggest difference.

· Information – Here you will find information on why speech and language is important and an introduction on tips for talking with your child.

· Development – In this section you will be able to find the level of development that your child is at in the four categories: Speech, Talking, Understanding, and Listening and Attention. These tables will help you work out what the next steps are for your child’s speech or language learning. They will also help you to find the right activities for your child in the activity section. Do not panic if the ages your child is at and their correct age don’t match. Children develop at different rates. It is more important to focus on what the next steps are rather than what age they should be doing those things.

· Activities – These are activities and games selected by speech and language therapist to support development at each level of speech and language. You can select activities in Language and Speech.

· Blog – Here you will be able to read blogs written by speech and language therapists and parents/carers.

We hope this resource is helpful in giving the information and activities to support your child’s speech and language at home during these difficult times.

If you require any further support in accessing this resource then please contact Kirsty Spencer at Kingsdown School.

COLOURFUL SEMANTICS

Colourful semantics is an approach created by Alison Bryan. It is aimed at helping children to develop their grammar but it is rooted in the meaning of words (semantics). Contact your child’s class teacher who can talk you through how you can use them at home.

Colourful semantics reassembles sentences by cutting them up into their thematic roles and then colour codes them.

The approach has 4 key colour coded stages.

  1. WHO – Orange
  2. WHAT DOING – Yellow
  3. WHAT – Green
  4. WHERE – Blue

Click on the ITS link below to access their starter pack for you to use at home.
