KINGSDOWN SCHOOL EVENTS IN THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR

Each year, Kingsdown school organises many events and also takes part in a number of national events. In this archive, you can see some of the events which took place in the 2016-2017 school year.

After cancelling two proposed Sports Days in June due to inclement weather we were very pleased that on 29th September we were at least able to hold the ‘field event’ section of Sports Day before the rain fell.

Despite the shortened event the pupils had a great time and we would like to thank all parents, family and friends who supported the pupils and Charlie who organised the event.

On Monday 20th March we were delighted to welcome the Interplay Theatre Group to Kingsdown once again.

Interplay enables young people who experience social and sensory barriers to realise their potential by creating and experiencing the arts. The performance takes place in a special room sized inflatable dome with an entrance tunnel.

Three experienced performers, (one dancer and two musicians) took the audience through a wonderful experience where the audience was at the centre of an interactive PAINT experience. With calming music and mood lighting the non-verbal performers guided and encouraged the audience to interact with brightly coloured paints, making marks and expressing themselves.

To acknowledge Remembrance Day on 11th November the whole school went into the playground. At 10.57 the bell was rung and the children went into their class line. At 11.00 the bell was rung again and for one minute there was almost complete silence.

The children made various poppies to place around the school and also assisted with selling poppies in school for The Royal British Legion.

This year as a school we have been thinking about all of our friends near and far who need some help at Christmas. We have been discussing our favourite aspects of Christmas and how we would feel if they were taken away.

All the children have been involved in building a special Christmas shoebox to send to a friend far away. The children have been fabulous! They have thought about all the lovely items we could send for the children to play with and tools to help them wherever they are. The boxes include toys, writing tools, games and cleaning items.

All the children and staff are very proud to have been involved in this project and we hope to receive a video of our gifts being received.

On Thursday 2nd March we celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as characters from story books.

Classes joined together and staff who do not normally have the opportunity to spend time in class or with the pupils were asked to read a story.

In school we made a display about bedtime stories.

There were some very good costumes and it was lovely to see so many children and staff dressing up for this occasion.

Kingsdown’s pupils and staff became rocket scientists during this year’s Science Week.

Our theme was space. Throughout the week every class took part in a range of experiments and investigations: we launched water rockets outside; made rockets out of film canisters; made and tested parachutes; experienced astronaut training in PE and many other exciting activities across all the curriculum subjects.

The highlight of the week was sending our chosen astronaut into space using a weather balloon. A Sheffield-based company called 'Sent into Space', launched our brave teddy called Buzz Lightbear and the whole school watched via a live video connection. The pupils started the countdown and watched as Buzz Lightbear commenced his epic adventure into the stratosphere.

Our very own Lilyann from Ducklings class was randomly selected to be the lucky pupil to press the button to send Buzz on his way. He reached a maximum height of 19,203m and returned to earth within the day. He will be getting a hero’s welcome when he returns to school!

Science Week was very enjoyable and fulfilled the school’s mission statement which is ‘be happy, communicate, learn and achieve’.

Thank you to all the parents who sponsored or came to support their children in our Red Nose Day sponsored carnival dance. All classes enjoyed dancing around the playground to music. In total the whole school completed 1,348 laps. Well done to all the classes who took part.

As well as the sponsored walk each class had the challenge to make a model out of recycling. Each class made something different, the variety was great and very hard to judge. We had models of lions, a castle, a house, a working windmill, trains, and robots but the winning class worked as a team to make a fantastic crocodile. Well done.
